Formal vs Informal Register
C1Memilih nada: chat, email, laporan
Pesan juga punya "baju": Got it, thanks! untuk grup WA tim, Thank you. I confirm receipt of the document. untuk klien.

- Netral: kebanyakan email kerja sehari-hari.
|---|---|---|
| Got it, thanks! | Thanks, I have received it. | Thank you. I confirm receipt of the document. |
| Can't make it today, sorry. | Sorry, I can't attend today. | I regret that I am unable to attend today. |
| Any news on the price? | Do you have an update on the price? | Could you please provide an update on the pricing? |
Pilihan kata: phrasal verb vs kata kerja formal
| Informal | Formal | Contoh formal |
|---|---|---|
| get | receive / obtain | We have received your payment. |
| ask (about) | enquire / inquire (about) | I am writing to enquire about your services. |
| find out | discover / determine | We discovered an error in the invoice. |
| put off | postpone | The launch has been postponed. |
| look into | investigate | We will investigate the complaint. |
| need | require | Further information is required. |
| help | assist | Please let me know if I can assist you further. |
Pilih salah satu, lalu pakai terus sampai akhir dokumen.
Penanda grammar formal
Selain kata, grammar juga memberi sinyal formal:
- Tanpa singkatan: I am, do not, cannot (bukan I'm, don't, can't).
- Pasif, supaya fokusnya ke kejadian, bukan ke orang: We made a mistake → A mistake was made.
- Nominalisasi (kata kerja dijadikan kata benda): We will implement the system → The implementation of the system…
- Kalimat lengkap, tanpa singkatan chat (pls, asap, thx).
- Permintaan tidak langsung: I would be grateful if you could…, Would it be possible to…?
- Payment must be made within 30 days.Pembayaran harus dilakukan dalam 30 hari.
- The reduction in costs was mainly due to the new supplier.Penurunan biaya terutama disebabkan oleh pemasok baru.
- Would it be possible to reschedule the meeting?Apakah rapatnya bisa dijadwalkan ulang?
Kesalahan umum: Pls send the report asap, thx. → Could you please send the report as soon as possible? Thank you.
- Terlalu santai ke klien atau atasan: Hey, what's up? Send me the price, ok?
- Terlalu kaku di chat dengan rekan kerja: Dear Andi, I hereby inform you that I shall arrive at the café shortly. Andi bisa mengira kamu sedang marah.
Kita sering terlalu kaku karena menerjemahkan bahasa surat resmi ("Dengan hormat… Bersama ini kami sampaikan…") kata per kata. Bahasa Inggris bisnis sekarang lebih sederhana dan langsung: I am writing to… atau Please find attached… sudah cukup formal.
Kesalahan umum: With respect, herewith we send you the invoice. → Please find attached our invoice.
Ikuti nada lawan bicaramu.
Ingat!
- Register = tingkat formalitas: informal (chat), netral (email sehari-hari), formal (klien baru, laporan).
- Formal: kata kerja satu kata (receive, postpone, require), tanpa singkatan, kalimat lengkap.
- Permintaan formal: I would be grateful if you could… / Would it be possible to…?
