Reporting Verbs (suggest, remind, admit…)
B2Melaporkan maksud, bukan cuma kata-kata
Dipakai di notulen rapat, email update, atau saat melapor ke atasan. Daripada mengulang said, pakai kata kerja yang langsung menunjukkan maksudnya (menyarankan, mengingatkan, mengakui), lalu ikuti pola khusus kata kerja itu.
Kata kerja pelapor itu mirip menu di aplikasi m-banking: tiap menu minta isian yang berbeda. Menu Transfer minta nomor rekening, menu Isi pulsa minta nomor HP, dan isian yang salah membuat transaksinya ditolak. Begitu juga di sini: remind minta orang + to V1, admit minta V-ing, apologise minta for + V-ing. Jadi hafalkan kata kerjanya bersama "kolom isiannya".
Rumus Reporting Verbs (suggest, remind, admit…)

Kenapa tidak cukup said?
Di notulen rapat, kamu jarang menyalin ucapan orang kata per kata. Yang kamu tulis adalah maksudnya, dan kata kerja pelapor (reporting verb) bisa merangkumnya dalam satu kata:
- "Don't forget the timesheet." → She reminded me to submit it.
- "OK, I'll check the budget." → Sari agreed to check the budget.
- "Yes, I made a mistake." → Kevin admitted making a mistake.
- "Why don't we start at ten?" → Budi suggested starting at ten.
Perhatikan bagian setelah kata kerjanya. Polanya berbeda-beda, dan di situlah kesalahan biasanya terjadi.
- In the meeting, Pak Hadi promised to review our proposal.Di rapat, Pak Hadi berjanji akan meninjau proposal kami.
Empat pola yang perlu kamu pegang
Jangan menghafal kata kerjanya satu per satu. Kelompokkan menurut apa yang datang sesudahnya, karena kata kerja dalam satu kelompok memakai pola yang sama.

Untuk negatif, taruh not tepat sebelum to atau V-ing: warned us not to click, admitted not checking the figures.
Suggest & recommend: jebakan paling sering
"Bos menyarankan saya untuk ikut kursus" sering diterjemahkan jadi suggested me to. Pola itu tidak ada. Suggest punya dua pola yang aman:
- suggest + V-ing, kalau pelakunya tidak perlu disebut: She suggested moving the meeting.
- suggest + (that) + S + (should) + V1, kalau orangnya mau disebut: She suggested that I call the client.
Di email resmi, kata kerja di pola kedua tetap V1 tanpa -s walaupun subject-nya he/she: I suggest that he book early. Recommend memakai dua pola yang sama.
Suggest itu seperti menaruh usulan di meja rapat. Yang kamu taruh adalah idenya, bukan orangnya: suggest moving the meeting, atau suggest that we move it. Karena itu pola suggest me to tidak ada. Jadi kalau orangnya mau disebut, masukkan ke dalam idenya: I suggest that you call him.
Kesalahan umum: My manager suggested me to take a short course. → My manager suggested that I take a short course.
Suggest tidak bisa diikuti orang + to. Masukkan orangnya ke bagian that: that I take.
Mengakui, menyangkal & menyalahkan
Kata kerja ini sering muncul saat ada masalah di kantor. Ada yang langsung disambung V-ing, ada yang lewat preposisi dulu:
- admit + V-ing (mengakui): He admitted forgetting the password.
- deny + V-ing (menyangkal): She denied seeing the email.
- apologise for + V-ing (minta maaf karena): We apologise for keeping you waiting.
- blame + orang + for (menyalahkan): They blamed the courier for the delay.
- accuse + orang + of (menuduh): The client accused us of missing the deadline.
Ejaan Amerika: apologize.
Kesalahan umum: The client accused us for delaying the project. → The client accused us of delaying the project.
Accuse berpasangan dengan of. For milik blame: blamed us for the delay.
Untuk kejadian yang sudah lewat, boleh juga pakai having + V3: He denied having seen the email.
Kesalahan khas orang Indonesia
Tiga terjemahan langsung yang sering lolos di email:
- Menawarkan diri: She offered herself to help ✗ → She offered to help ✓
- Meminta ke seseorang: He asked to me to send it ✗ → He asked me to send it ✓
- Minta maaf karena: I apologise for be late ✗ → I apologise for being late ✓
Kesalahan umum: He said me to wait in the lobby. → He told me to wait in the lobby.
Say tidak bisa langsung diikuti orang. Untuk menyuruh atau meminta, pakai tell/ask + orang + to V1.
Ingat!
- + to V1: agree, offer, promise, refuse. + orang + to V1: advise, remind, warn, ask, tell.
- + V-ing: suggest, recommend, admit, deny.
- Suggest tidak pernah + orang + to: suggest moving atau suggest that we move.
- apologise for + V-ing, blame orang for, accuse orang of + V-ing.
- Negatif: not tepat sebelum to atau V-ing: warned us not to click.

Suggest diikuti V-ing kalau pelakunya tidak disebut: suggested moving. Pola to move atau us to move tidak dimiliki suggest.

- He suggested to me take a break.

Kalau orangnya mau disebut, masukkan ke bagian that + S + V1: that I take. Suggested me to adalah kesalahan klasik.
